Back a few months ago, I started a "self-escrow" savings account at ING. I automatically save $130.00 every two weeks out of my pay to pay for a few expenses that come around as surprises every so often (alarm bill, homeowners' association dues, car insurance and flood insurance), plus a little padding.

When our six month premium for car insurance was due earlier this week it was a lot nicer to transfer the money out of that account and write a check rather than have a whiparound for the cash and wonder which Peter I was robbing to pay Paul.
