I already told you I tend towards Universalism a little (but the Christian kind). I'm also a full preterist, so I don't think Hell exists anymore; but even if it did, I don't think it would be eternal. (Before you jump on this, there are other examples of eternal things in the Bible which in the end proved to be limited in time. It was a not uncommon figure of speech, apparently.) Finally, I am not totally against the reincarnation idea, but I don't think there's any support for it in the Bible.

To conclude, I think we move on to the next life (in Heaven), in better or worse shape, depending on what we did here. You know, like in the parable with the five talents.

I'm not sure I follow. If you only have one life on Earth, and the result is either eternal salvation or eternal damnation, what is it you're supposed to learn from going to Hell?

If you threw reincarnation into the picture, then this would make sense to me, but in the context of Christianity I don't think I understand what you mean.

Actually, I don't think they did. (I'm reading these posts out of order, obviously. Too many blogs. <g>)

A possible answer is "to learn". Since it's the "normal" answer to the problem of evil in general, it's not too much to expect people talking about Hell to understand this. After all, it's also an answer to the very logical question "why aren't we created directly in Heaven".
